Before discovering the national park itself, make a detour to the Centro de Visitantes de Timanfaya, a free volcanic museum located in Mancha Blanca. This small interpretive center features educational exhibits on the island’s geology and a beautiful view of the lava field. It’s the perfect introduction to Timanfaya National Park.

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.
Why visit the Centro de Visitantes de Timanfaya?
Is the Timanfaya museum worth it? Our opinion:
Yes, the Centre de Visitantes de Timanfaya is well worth a visit, if you have the time. Exhibitions on the island’s volcanic history help you better understand the landscapes that surround you. And the view, surrounded by lava, is very nice.

Why is the Centre de Visitantes de Timanfaya famous?
It’s not the museum that’s famous, but Timanfaya National Park. The eruptions of 1730-1736 shaped the landscape of Lanzarote. In this museum, you’ll gain a better understanding of how and when the different parts of the island were formed, and how nature is taking over again.
Our favorite moments
Here are our 3 favorites from our visit:
- Geological map with volcanic craters
- The observation platform at the rear of the building offers a spectacular view of the Timanfaya lava flows.

History in brief
The Centre de Visitantes de Timanfaya recounts Lanzarote’s exceptional volcanic history:
- 1730-1736: A series of volcanic eruptions radically transform Lanzarote’s landscape
- 19th century: The Tinguatón volcano erupts near Mancha Blanca, miraculously sparing the village.
- 1970s: Timanfaya National Park created to protect volcanic landscapes
- Today: The center serves as an educational introduction to the island’s geological heritage.

Geological explanations
The main part of the exhibition focuses on the geological aspects of the island.
You’ll discover how the eruptions of 1730-1736 radically transformed the island’s landscape, engulfing entire villages under lava.
The 18th-century historical maps on display vividly illustrate the extent of the destruction, showing the fire that enveloped the surrounding villages. The exhibition also includes a seismograph, a meteorological station and satellite data to help you understand modern volcano monitoring.

Depending on the time of day, you can also discover a volcanic explosion simulation room and short film simulations about Lanzarote.
Nous avons particulièrement aimé la maquette avec les cratères volcaniques de Lanzarote.

Lanzarote’s flora and fauna
The center also offers explanations of the flora and fauna: life’s remarkable adaptation to extreme volcanic conditions. We discovered how endemic vegetation gradually colonizes lava fields, and how marine species take advantage of coastlines carved out by volcanic activity.
You’ll be surprised to learn that these seemingly hostile landscapes are home to a unique biodiversity adapted to volcanic soils.

The belvedere: a view of the lava
One of the center’s most memorable experiences is its observation platform at the rear of the building.
We spent long moments contemplating the spectacular expanse of the Timanfaya lava flows, which stretch as far as the eye can see. This unique perspective allows you to visualize the scale of past eruptions and better understand the island’s volcanic geography.
The striking contrast between the black volcanic rocks and the blue Canarian sky offers an unforgettable natural spectacle that perfectly complements the scientific explanations discovered inside.
