How to get around Lanzarote – short answers
Travel time to Lanzarote
The first thing is to understand the size of the island and the driving times required between the various towns and Timanfaya, Lanzarote’s most visited site.
The island isn’t very big, so it’s pretty easy to explore every corner, no matter where you’re staying.
Best option, depending on what you want to do
- If you want to explore as much of the island as possible
- We recommend renting a car. Prices are reasonable and driving is very easy. See car offers and prices
- If you’re planning to enjoy mainly the beach and pool, and just see a few well-known sights, we advise you to choose the organized tours – see the options – our favorites are listed later in the article.
- If you’re looking to travel as cheaply as possible and enjoy exploring cities, buses may be all you need.
How to get to your hotel in Lanzarote from the airport
The first solution is to go to your hotel.
Car rental
If you choose to rent a car, we recommend you do so directly at the airport, as this is where you have the most choice, and saves you the cost of a cab.
Hotel shuttle or cab
If you don’t plan to rent a car, ask your hotel if they have an airport transfer shuttle.
Alternatively, there’s a cab rank just outside the airport.
Private or shared transfers
You can also book a transfer with a specialized company.
See transfer offers
Public transport
Buses are also available. However, they are not very frequent and do not drop you off right in front of your hotel.
There are buses every day between:
- Airport and Arrecife: line 22 on weekdays and line 23 at weekends
- Airport and Puerto del Carmen, then Playa Blanca: routes 161 and 261
- Airport and Costa Teguise: no direct line, you have to go via Arrecife

Lanzarote by car – rental and driving tips
Our preferred option is to rent a car. This gives you the most freedom to discover Lanzarote’s most beautiful landscapes.
Prices are reasonable for an island and driving is easy.
A small car is enough, but you can take any size you like, as there are no narrow streets and parking spaces are fairly wide.
The platform we personally use (since we discovered them) is Discovercars.
As soon as we decide on a destination and dates, we look at their offers and the types of cars available.
After research, they often have the best offers for our needs.
It is one of the highest rated comparison sites in the market.

Car-free Lanzarote: on organized tours
If you don’t feel like renting a car, as you’ll be spending a lot of time relaxing by the pool or on the beach, organized tours are the best option.
They let you visit the most famous places without worrying about organization, and what’s more, the guide will share lots of information to help you discover Lanzarote’s treasures.
Our favourite excursions include:
- Must-See: Timanfaya National Park with its magnificent volcanoes, Los Hervideos cliffs and famous vineyards – see program and availability
- Dolphin excursion – see program and availability
- In the footsteps of César Manrique with the foundation and several of his works – see program and availability

Lanzarote by cab
If you’re not traveling too far from your hotel, you can also choose to visit a place by cab.
Cabs are fairly reasonably priced, but it’s still a cost of availability.
What’s more, in Lanzarote, you can take advantage of tourist cab offers.
It takes you on a tour with defined stops, for a predefined price.
This gives you a little more flexibility than organized tours, but without having to rent a car and drive.
The main cab company is Lanzarote Taxi.
Lanzarote by bike
Lanzarote is a very flat island with many roads in very good condition.
It’s a great destination for cycling.
The island has several companies that rent out classic mountain bikes or electric bikes.
It’s the ideal way to get some exercise while discovering the island.
However, there are plenty of buses on the island. And roadsides are often made of sharp volcanic rock. It’s often difficult to stop and let things pass.
Lanzarote by bus / public transport
Lanzarote’s bus network is developed more for locals than for tourists.
There are buses connecting all the towns on Lanzarote.
As a result, you won’t be able to get to more remote areas. And when there is a bus, the frequency is often very low.
See the official Lanzarote Intercity bus website.
Prices range from 1.40 euros to 5 euros.
