Choose the right time of day
Excursions to Morro Jable take place in the morning, afternoon or at sunset, and all offer good chances of spotting dolphins, whales being rarer. Morning outings benefit from calm seas, stable weather conditions and ideal light for photography, while avoiding the heat. Late afternoon or sunset excursions offer a romantic and intimate atmosphere, with spectacular light effects over the ocean. Each part of the day has its own charm, so you can choose what suits you best.

Protect yourself from the sun
The Canary sun can be deceptive, especially at sea where the sea breeze masks the sensation of heat. The sun’s rays reflect off the water, intensifying exposure. Generously apply high SPF sun cream (SPF 50+) before setting off, and reapply regularly, especially after swimming. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap to protect your face and neck. Polarized sunglasses are essential to protect your eyes from glare on the water and improve your visual comfort throughout the trip.

Dress appropriately
Even under the Canarian sun, temperatures at sea can be cooler than expected, especially during fast sailing where the wind increases the sensation of cold. Take along a light jacket or windbreaker that you can slip on if necessary. Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that dries quickly, as you may get splashed by spray or go swimming. A swimsuit under your clothes means you’re ready for an impromptu swim. Non-slip closed-toe shoes are recommended for safe movement on the boat deck.

Anticipate seasickness
If you’re sensitive to seasickness, a few simple tips can help. Sit at the back of the boat, stay outside to enjoy the fresh air, and avoid overeating before the trip. Stare at the horizon and sip water slowly if you feel nauseous. Some people think that outboards cause less seasickness, but this depends mainly on sailing conditions.

Respect marine life
Dolphin and whale watching are privileges that come with responsibilities. These animals evolve in their natural habitat and deserve our respect. Don’t shout, and avoid sudden gestures that might frighten them. Professional crews know the rules of respectful approach: maintaining a safe distance, limiting observation time, not chasing animals if they move away. Always follow the crew’s instructions on how to behave. This respectful approach not only guarantees the animals’ well-being, but also increases your chances of observation, as relaxed, unstressed animals are more likely to remain visible and interact naturally.
