Our favorite car rental platform: DiscoverCars
Is Lanzarote safe?
Yes, on the whole Lanzarote is a safe destination. There are few risks apart from the currents on some beaches and a few thefts, as in all tourist resorts.
The sun can also be very strong, so remember to protect yourself and drink plenty of water.
Lanzarote is a Spanish island where Spanish laws apply.
Risks in the ocean

Lanzarote is a beach destination. You immediately want to dive in.
But the sea can be dangerous in the middle of the ocean.
Not too dangerous with animals. But it’s the currents and waves that can be dangerous. But not on every beach.
Advice:
Check the beach flag if there is one, and read the signs explaining the dangers of the beach.
Theft and crime

As in all tourist resorts, you’ll find minor crimes such as theft, especially of cars in lightly frequented parking lots.
Advice:
Be careful not to leave anything visible in the car, to avoid tempting potential thieves passing by.
And in crowded areas, be sure to secure your valuables.
Risk of eruption on Lanzarote

The presence of volcanoes is evident at Lanzaorte. Timanfaya National Park is the most visited place on the island. The biggest eruptions recorded in the region were the 6 years between 1730 and 1736 – during this period, over 100 volcanoes became active and devastated part of the island(see excursions to visit Timanfaya).
You may be wondering about the risk of rash. Here’s what I found: It’s thought that “if an eruption were to occur, volcanologists could give advance warning, but it would be difficult to say where on the island the eruption would occur” (according to volcanocafé).

Sun hazards

Lanzarote is an extremely sunny island. And that’s one of the reasons we love going there(see our list).
And, as everywhere where the sun shines almost all the time, remember to protect your skin.
Advice:
- Wear sunscreen regularly (don’t forget your feet and the tops of your ears).
- Wear a hat and sunglasses
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid hiking during the hottest hours of the day
Risks of hiking: volcanic rocks and heat

Lanzarote has many superb hikes, especially around its volcanoes.
These are fascinating places, and we highly recommend them. But there’s no shadow at all.
Drink plenty of water and protect yourself, especially your head.
What’s more, you’re surrounded by volcanic rock. Be careful, as these rocks can be very sharp. Keep to the marked paths.
Scammers
Again, as this is a tourist destination, you can also find scammers. Our favorite subjects in the Canary Islands are requests for donations for the deaf and dumb. Personally, we’ve never come across one before.
There are also many “Aloe Vera museums” on the island. Even if some of them make a real effort to present and inform you about plants, their virtues and uses, they are first and foremost stores. And take a good look, because almost all the products don’t come from the island.

Driving in Lanzarote is very easy. Roads are generally in excellent condition (except for very remote areas). There is little traffic.
OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- A small car is all you need.
- But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
- Demand is high, so book early.

Is it safe to drink the water in Lanzarote?

Yes, you can drink tap water. There’s no danger.
Just be aware that Lanzarote receives very little rain. So tap water comes from desalinated seawater. So it doesn’t taste the best, or the taste we’re used to. Most people drink bottled mineral water.
Emergency numbers in Lanzarote
In Europe, 112 is the number for all emergencies: police, ambulance and fire. Operators on this number can speak several languages.
This is the only number you need to keep in mind.
Safety in cities
