Is Pozo Negro worth a visit? Our opinion
Yes, Pozo Negro is well worth a visit.
We found the place very charming, with its pebble beach and black sand, small white fishermen’s cottages and archeological site.
It’s one of our favorite places off the beaten track.
What you can see: beach, village…
The beautiful access road
Pozo Negro is reached via the FV-420 road, which descends into a valley surrounded by arid mountains and a lava field.
Fuerteventura is very arid, but here you’ll find some of the most arid landscapes on the island. But in the heart of the valley, you can still see a few palm trees, signs of the presence of water. You’re in the Malpais Grande protected area.
The views are already very soothing before you reach the village.
The road is easy and paved all the way.
Pozo Negro beach
At the end of this road, you’ll find a wide bay with a beach.
At high tide you’ll see mainly medium-sized grey pebbles. But at low tide you discover black sand and areas with volcanic rocks.
We really liked the size of the beach and its black sand, which makes a nice change from the fine white sand of many other beaches.
The beach is calm and ideal for swimming.
In our opinion, this is a popular beach for locals at weekends. But every time we visited, it was very quiet.
Fishing boats
This bay creates a natural harbor offering shelter from the waves, which was perfect for creating a fishing village.
After the island was conquered in the 15th century, it became a strategic port for goods too. There were expeditions to Morocco.
You can still see a few boats around the houses (in theory, if they’re not out). It makes the place even more picturesque!
Little white houses
And, of course, you’ll find a few small white cube-shaped houses with dashes of color (mostly blue)…
The whitewashed houses are typical of the region.
The Poblado de Atalayita site
One of the most fascinating places to visit in Fuerteventura is Atalaytia, an archaeological site in a lava field! The mix of scenery and historical interest makes it a must-see for us.
It’s not too big, and it’s easy to visit.
You can start with the museum.
We liked the fact that it was built underground. This way, the building blends into the landscape without detracting from the experience!
The site was made up of 115 small structures. They were built of stone and were circular or semicircular in shape. What’s more, they were half-buried to protect them from wind and drought.
Some of them have been partially reconstructed to give you an idea of what it was like.
