Why visit Los Hervideros Lanzarote?
Are the Los Hervideros cliffs worth the effort?
Sea, sky, volcanoes and lava…. Los Hervideros is one of the best places to visit on Lanzarote. Easily accessible, it’s a short walk to explore the lava field and watch the waves crash against the cliffs. Take a look:
Some interesting info: name, geology, history…
- The name Los Hervideros means “bubbling springs” because of the way the waves crash and swirl in the caves.
- Located to the south of Timanfaya National Park, Lava is a lava flow from 18th-century eruptions that stretches all the way to the sea.
- It was shaped by the rapid cooling of lava hitting the sea and later by erosion creating small caves.
- The red volcano behind is Montana Bermeja (112m) (not to be confused with the volcano of the same name on La Graciosa).

Bubbling springs
Our favorite view from the Los Hervideros promenade is right next to the parking lot because you can see the 2 main caves, the deep blue water and the red Montana Bermeja in the background. We sat there for a while, admiring the landscape and nature’s work.
In the photo below, you can see the people walking along the path, giving you an idea of the scale:
For the photo below, we zoomed in. You can see that it’s possible to walk through the lava and explore. An entire path has been laid out to admire the cliffs from different angles.
There are just a few steps down to explore. It’s quite impressive to see how the lava has cooled and created different shapes.
Below is the narrow path to reach a lower level and see under one of the arches we admired at the start of the walk. When it’s busy, it can be difficult to get to.
And here’s the view of crystal-clear water and eroded lava:

Lava cliffs
The path that continues is not as flat as the first section, but it’s also a very easy one. There are no more caves to be seen, but beautiful lava forms that the sea is slowly eroding away. Here are a few more images of Los Hervideros Lanzarote:
Other parking lots along the coast
You may notice many other small parking lots along the LZ-703. We’ve tried it all. None have the amazing views and caves like the main Los Hervideros parking lot. Just more lava shapes:
Video – virtual visit
Here’s a short video of the walk to Los Hervideros Lanzarote to give you an idea of what to expect. We filmed it at high tide, but unfortunately the sea was very calm that day.
Nearby attractions – Salinas de Janubio & Green Lake
Not far from Los Hervideros are 2 other fascinating Lanzarote attractions and superb photography locations. Both are included in our eBook.
- Salinas de Janubio – the salt marshes between sea and volcanoes offer a unique landscape of intense colors and fascinating shapes.
- The Green Lake (El Golfo) – A half-volcano open to the sea with a black sand beach and a permanent lagoon of intense green color (due to algae) – see more photos
