The city’s main beaches are:

- Playa Esmeralda to the south
- Playa Esmeralda Norte between the two

But you can also find magnificent beaches not far from the town (less than 20 min by car), which we find even more beautiful:
- Playa de Sotavento de Jandia (the famous lagoon beach)
- Playa del Viejo Reyes in La Pared
- Playa La Lajita to the north
- Playa Tierra Dorada to the south, with its natural pools
If you’re willing to drive a little further south (30 to 45 minutes), you’ll find even more suggestions in our article on the best beaches in Morro Jable.
To make the most of the most beautiful beaches, we recommend renting a car. Driving in Fuerteventura is very easy.

1. Playa Costa Calma
Why do we love it?
Right in the heart of the town, Costa Calma beach is 2 kilometers long at low tide, making it ideal for a morning stroll with your feet in the water.
Its golden sand is surrounded by a little vegetation and offers views of Fuerteventura’s small mountains in the background.
The waters are turquoise, with almost always wind and waves, but not too many, hence the name Costa Calma.
We particularly appreciated the view of the beach from the seafront promenade.

3. Playa Esmeralda
Why do we love it?
A little further south, you’ll find Esmeralda beach, just a little larger than Esmealda Norte.
No buildings just behind the beach, it’s a little wilder.
We particularly liked the colorful volcanic rocks to the north of the beach at low tide.
You’ll notice that it’s made up of 2 coves, the smallest of which disappears at high tide.

Why do we love it?
This is Fuerteventura’s best-known beach(see our best-of). It stretches for several kilometers between Costa Calma and Morro Jable. At low tide, it’s gigantic and you won’t be short of space!
We really enjoyed the view from the mirador, where you realize just how unique it is with its shape and the lagoon that is created at low tide.
What’s more, it’s surrounded by sand-covered dunes and mountains, so the scenery seems to be from another planet.
Access from Costa Calma

5. Playa del Viejo Reyes (La Pared – 15 min)
Why do we love it?
We like more dramatic landscapes, and for us, one of Fuerteventura’s most beautiful beaches is at La Pared. Playa del Viejo Reyes is popular for learning to surf, but also boasts some of the most beautiful cliffs on the island.
We recommend descending at low tide to admire the different rock structures. Fascinating.
It is about 800m long.
You’ll find it in our top list of Fuerteventura’s most beautiful landscapes.
Access from Costa Calma

6. Playa Tierra Dorada (Malnombre, 15min)
Why do we love it?
We were very pleasantly surprised by this beach, which was one of our favorites.
Admittedly, the wind has picked up and the sand has stung us, but the scenery is idyllic.
To the north, a large sand dune has formed, allowing us to get some height to admire the beach.
In the center, lagoons form at low tide, providing a cool, quiet spot to cool off, and to the south, small dunes form against the dark-colored cliffs.
The mix of colors is exceptional.

7. Playa de La Barca
Why do we love it?
Technically it’s the beginning of Sotavento beach, but it’s so different from the lagoon part of Risco del Paso, that we count it as a different beach.
It is long and wide (2km and 650m approx.).
If you like long walks with your feet in the sand, this is the right option for you. It’s completely wild, except at the very beginning where you’ll find the famous René Egli windsurfing school.
This is where the World Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Championship (Fuerteventura Grand Slam) is held, one of the most popular competitions.
Access from Costa Calma
- Driving time from the center of Costa Calma = 10min
- Unsealed road

- We highly recommend the Innside by Melia, with its magnificent decor – see prices, photos and availability

- Unsupervised beach
- Toilets and shower at the end of the beach
- Sun loungers for rent near the school, the rest is wild.
- Lots of windsurfers and kitesurfers
- No restaurant on the beach
- The beach faces south-east, ideal for sunrises
- No grey areas
8. Playa La Lajita (15 min)
Why do we love it?
We like it because it has a completely different atmosphere. If you’re looking for a change of scenery, we recommend a detour to this village. It features in our selection of Fuerteventura’s secret spots.
The beach is made up of small grey pebbles and black sand. This contrasts with the turquoise of the water and the red of the cliffs.
And right next door to the heart of the village, with its pretty little church (open Sundays only).
It’s a very different experience from those long sandy beaches. We love it.
