Excursions from Corralejo: what you need to know
Corralejo has a great range of activities and excursions, if you choose not to rent a car to explore the island.
Corralejo is in the north of the island. The island is not large, so you won’t be spending hours in the car. There will be more exploration time than travel timewhich is very pleasant.
We chose excursions departing from Corralejo.
- Direct access to Lobos Island
- Direct access to the sand dunes
- Direct access to the ferry to Lanzarote
- But no tour from Corralejo to explore Cofet,e as it’s quite far.
- Less choice of boat tours than in the south
Be careful, if you look at lists ofexcursions to Fuerteventura, some only leave from the south!
1. The best of Fuerteventura: excursions around the island
Our favorite excursions in Fuerteventura are those that take you to see the different landscapes the island has to offer: mountains, large sea caves, sand dunes…
On this panoramic tour, you’ll discover..:
Inland mountains
In the center of Fuerteventura lies a volcanic mountain range with several viewpoints.
The land is very old. Fuerteventura first appeared 20 million years ago, and most of the land was formed 5 million years ago. As a result, the shapes have been smoothed by millions of years of erosion.
The earth is bare with shades of red, orange and brown. It’s fascinating to admire.
Ajuy caves
One of Fuerteventura’s main geological attractions is the Ajuy cave complex.
In this area, you can discover an ancient black sand beach, the basalt complex along the way which is the oldest rock on the Canary Island: it’s actually the seabed that was revealed the oceanic crust 70 million years ago.
And at the end of the walk, you can explore large sea caves.
The dunes of Corralejo
One of Fuerteventura’s most famous landscapes, the Corralejo Sand Dunes Natural Park. It’s pretty impressive right next to the turquoise water to see dune after dune with a road running through. And no, they weren’t blown in from the Sahara. They are formed naturally from the shells of sea creatures.

2. Boat transfer to Lobos Island
Departure: Corralejo, north of Fuerteventura
Duration: 5 hours to one day, depending on the tour chosen
Pick-up from Corralejo hotels
Another must-do excursion is the boat trip to the island of Lobos. From Corralejo in the north of the island, it’s a 15-minute journey to the island of Lobos.
The island has scenery like we’ve never seen anywhere else, with many small cones of volcanic rock. Sometimes we felt like we were on another planet, and we love that.
You can spend the whole day on the island. There are no roads and only one car to collect the garbage. You can:
- spend some time on the beach at the foot of a volcano, with golden sands and beautiful waters
- walk around the island to discover its stunning scenery, including a feeding lagoon for migratory birds
- climb up to the lighthouse to admire the whole island
- swim in the shallow waters of the small fishing village
- or if you fancy a steeper hike, you can climb the volcano
But there are boat options where you can spend less time on the island but more time on the boat. See the options
And you can see more photos and info in our complete guide to visiting Lobos Island.

Around the central beaches, the big resorts.
Secrets Bahia 5-star luxury hotel – See prices, photos and availability

3. Go on a buggy or e-bike adventure…
The Fuerteventura region is also ideal for off-the-beaten-track adventures and lunar landscapes.
Take a bandana or other piece of cloth to cover your mouth, as a lot of dust will fly around you.
But it’s great for getting your adrenalin pumping, having fun and discovering more remote corners of the island: desert hills and dry riverbeds.
The options are:
- buggy: see program and availability – book now! (Please note that to drive a vehicle, you must be at least 18 years old, but young people can be passengers).
- by eBike: see program and availability – book now!
- Segway: see program and availability – book now!
4. Excursions from Fuerteventura to Lanzarote: volcanoes and wines
Another good option during a stay in Fuerteventura is to visit the neighboring island of Lanzarote.
They are both very different, as many of Lanzarote’s landscapes are quite recent compared with Fuerteventura (eruption in the 18th century).
It’s a short ferry ride from Corralejo (north of Fuerteventura) to Playa Blanca (south of Lanzarote).
If you don’t want to organize everything yourself, you can book a full tour with pick-up, boat and bus, or a walking tour to the other end.
- The volcanoes of Timanfaya National Park are impressive. A single road crosses it, with limited access. It’s surreal
- This tour combines the park with a visit to the famous vineyards. Despite the lack of rain and the hardness of the soil, wine production is high. We’ll show you how.
5. 4×4 excursion on El Cotillo tracks
The north of Fuerteventura is an ideal place for off-road excursions, with trails around the volcanoes.
You can book a private tour to the Barranco del Encantado, for example.
Or you can join a tour that will take you there:
- In the village of La Oliva
- On the slopes of the famous Tindaya mountain
- At Château Toston
- And on the beautiful beaches of El Cotillo

6. Excursion to Calderon Hondo
If you want to stretch your legs, you can also explore the volcanoes.
One of the best-known short hikes is up Calderon Hondo to its summit at 278m.
If you don’t have a vehicle, you can book an excursion – see availability
7. Bus trip to Puerto del Rosario
If you’re looking for a slightly less touristy experience, Fuerteventura’s capital is not a main attraction. Here you can see how the locals live.
Among the city’s points of interest, we liked..:
- The large number of sculptures
- Street art
- Lime kilns along the seafront promenade
- Notre Dame del Rosario church
- And there’s also the Miguel de Unamuno Museum, but it was closed when we visited.
See our article on the best things to do in Puerto del Rosario.
Access from Corralejo: 25min drive. Bus line 6.
8. Dolphin watching in Corralejo
Boat tours to see dolphins in Corralejo are limited.
This is combined with a visit to the island of Lobos.
We prefer Morro Jable to see the dolphins, but it’s a 1h40-minute drive.
