Is Fuerteventura windy? Quick answers
How windy is Fuerteventura?
Yes, it’s windy in Fuerteventura. It’s a fact. Some believe the island’s name comes from the Spanish word for “strong wind” (viento fuerte).
However, it’s often a welcome refreshment, and rarely a problem in our opinion. And he’s not there all the time.
That’s why you can see so many windmills on the island.

How much wind is there in Fuerteventura?
The prevailing wind in Fuerteventura is from the NNE (north-northeast).
It’s hard to predict how much wind you’ll have during your stay.
Wind intensity depends on a number of factors:
- your location on the island
- time of year (some months are windier than others)
- the weather situation in the region
- time of day
- …

Why is Fuerteventura so windy?
As on all islands in the warmer regions of the world, the sea has a major influence on the wind.
During the day, the earth heats up and the air above it rises. Fresh air is then drawn in over the sea to replace the rising air, creating a wind.
There are no mountains or trees on the island, and the highest point is only 807 meters above sea level. So there’s nothing to stop the wind.

The windiest seasons in Fuerteventura – when to travel to avoid the wind
What is the windiest month in Fuerteventura?
The two windiest months in Fuerteventura are normally July and August.
This is actually good news, as it makes temperatures bearable.
And the wind isn’t blowing hard all the time!
And it’s during this period that the Windsurf World Cup takes place.

What is the least windy month in Fuerteventura?
The wind is estimated to be lighter in September and October, and sometimes in early November.
This is the best time to visit Fuerteventura: temperatures are warm, the wind is lighter, and the sea temperature is ideal for swimming. What’s more, it’s less crowded because it’s not the school vacation period in Europe.
But we can’t guarantee anything.
Some days are windy, others less so… it’s impossible to predict. We’re talking about averages.

Where to go? Wind-free areas and beaches in Fuerteventura
Less windy area of Fuerteventura
There’s no part of Fuerteventura that doesn’t get wind.
Weather is not a stable thing, so there’s no direct answer to this question.
On the whole, you’ll feel less wind in the cities, protected as they are by buildings.
The east coast is considered less windy than the west, and that’s where you’ll find the resorts to stay.
We read that Caleta de Fuste was the least windy town, but we couldn’t find any data to confirm this.

Is Fuerteventura too windy for sunbathing?
It depends on the day and even the time.
Sometimes this can make the experience difficult, but it doesn’t last!
Which beaches are protected from the wind in Fuerteventura?
For a start, you should know that urban beaches are often less windy, as buildings will stop it up to a certain point:
- Playa Chica in Puerto del Rosario
- North of Playa de Costa Calma
- Playa del Castillo in Caleta de Fuste
- The beaches of Corralejo

Then, as the prevailing wind comes from the NNE (north-northeast), if you confirm on the day you’re there that this is indeed the direction, you need to choose a beach that shelters you from this direction:
For example, the wild beaches to the east of Morro Jable, such as PLaya de Ojos (but no paved roads to get there).
But no beach in Fuerteventura is really known for always being protected from the wind. You’d know. And it’s often difficult to predict how the wind will behave.

The beach where we experienced the strongest winds (the sand stung our skin) is also the beach we found the most beautiful in the whole of Fuerteventura. The wind and sea create magnificent dunes and lagoons. We love Playa Tierra Dorada!

Tips for managing

Stone sheds
On some beaches, you may find rock shelters. You can sit in one of them and enjoy the sun’s rays, while being sheltered from most of the wind.
But be careful. It is forbidden to build new ones!

Protected deckchairs
On some beaches, you’ll also find lounger areas with slight protection from the wind.
Clothes pegs (clips) for beach towels
Bring or buy large clothespins to hold the towel on the chaise longue.
To be honest, even without wind, it’s very useful to keep the towel from sliding down your back all the time.
Clothespins for drying
All hotels have racks on the balconies for drying towels and bathing suits.
For peace of mind, we recommend you bring along some clothespins to keep your belongings in place.
Sun cream
Even if the wind is cooling you down and you don’t think it’s particularly hot, be sure to wear a high factor sunscreen! THE sun is beating down hard!

What is calima?
You’ve probably heard of the mistral in France, and the sirocco that blows from the Sahara to the Mediterranean.
The calima is a special wind that blows from the Sahara to the Canary Islands and beyond. A calima is accompanied by dust and heat.
This meteorological event only lasts a few days, and at most a week. The dust gives the sky a yellow/orange tint, sometimes considerably reducing visibility.
On one of our trips to Fuerteventura, we experienced this for ourselves. This calima wasn’t too intense, but it does impact the island experience.
You have to look on the bright side, it gives a mysterious air to the landscape!
