Best location for exploring the island
Where are they located?
The island of Fuerteventura isn’t very big, but it’s long.
Even if you stay in one city, you can easily explore the others. Main roads connect them. It’s very easy to drive.
From Morro Jable, in the far south, to Corralejo on the north coast, it’s a 1h40-minute drive on the expressway.
Distance from airport :
- FUE airport in Corralejo = 30min
- FUE airport in Caleta de Fuste = 10min
- FUE airport in Costa Calma = 1h
- FUE airport in Moror Jable = 1h15
If you rent a car
If you rent a car, Caleta de Fuste is the most central. This balances out your daily driving times.
But if you’re staying longer than a week in Fuerteventura, we recommend you choose 2 hotels: half the time in Morro Jable and the other half in Corralejo, to soak up the atmosphere of these two very pleasant towns.
OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Fuerteventura
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- A small car is all you need.
- But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
- Demand is high, so book early.
If you don’t want to rent a car
For day trips:
Most tours are reserved either for those staying in the north (Corralejo or Caleta de Fuste) or those in the south (Morro Jable or Costa Calma).
Some of my favorites are:
- Dolphin watching boat tour from the south – our favourite: See programme and availability – and book!
- Ferry to the northern island of Lobos: Book your boat HERE
- Panoramic tours from the north: See program and availability or from the south: See program and availability

Cities with the best beaches
Corralejo beaches
Corralejo has a wide variety of beaches:
- Small beaches in towns like Playa de Los Verilitos
- The small lagoon of Playa Viejo Corralejo
- Long beaches with waves around the dunes like Playa del Pozo
- Popcorn beaches, not for sunbathing but for being surprised
- Access to the island of Lobos with its beaches and natural pools
See our article on Corralejo’s most beautiful beaches
Caleta de Fuste beaches
Caleta de Fuste has two beaches:
- Playa del Castillo, wide and gently sloping
- Playa de la Guirra, in front of the Sheraton and Elba hotels, narrower but also with a gentle slope.
On the other hand, the surrounding coast doesn’t offer the magnificent beaches of the other towns.
Costa Calma beaches
In the town itself, you’ll find the long beach of Costa Calma, ideal for a sunrise walk, as well as two beautiful coves: Playa Esmeralda and Playa Esmeralda Norte.
And nearby you’ll find some of Fuerteventura’s most beautiful beaches, such as the Sotavento de Jandia lagoon, or playa Tierra Dorada…

Morro Jable beaches
In the town of Morro Jable you have the very long Playa del Matorral. It has 3 sections: near the old town where it is narrower with a large dune, around the lighthouse where it is very wide with sand as far as the eye can see, and to the north, where it is next to Ibersotar hotels.
But nearby you’ll find some of Fuerteventura’s most beautiful beaches, such as the Sotavento de Jandia lagoon, or playa Tierra Dorada…

CHOOSING A HOTEL IN Fuerteventura
Choosing where to stay:
Select by hotel type:
- 5-star hotels
- Best boutique-hotels
- Best adults-only hotels
- Best all-inclusive hotels
- Best hotels for families
- Best resorts (quiet or lively)
Our favorite: Hotel INNSide – See prices, photos and availability
Select by city:
Best experience: atmosphere, food scene, crowds
Atmosphere in Corralejo
We love Corralejo. The city isn’t too scattered, so it’s easy to walk everywhere and enjoy the whole town. And we think it has more charm than other resort towns.
It is rich in bars and restaurants with plenty of variety. And there are plenty of restaurants along the waterfront to enjoy the view.
And there are several shopping malls for those who love shopping. El Campanario is the prettiest, with its colorful buildings…
Atmosphere in Caleta de Fuste
Caleta also has a lively life, but we find it less charming. It’s a purely tourist town, with lots of international bars and restaurants.
Every evening, you’ll find a venue with live music.
Among our favorites:
- Restaurant 15 Fuerteventura, with a smaller menu and more sophisticated work.
- Bar Oliver with its tapas and cocktails. We loved the rooftop.
Atmosphere at Costa Calma
Costa Calma is much quieter. It’s all about tourism, with large hotel complexes.
The choice of restaurants is more limited, and you won’t find them right on the beach.
Atmosphere in Morro Jable
In Morro Jable, you’ll also find the atmosphere and charm of the old town. We really enjoyed it.
On the other hand, the city is very long, and if you’re staying at the other end, it’s harder to enjoy it.
Morro Jable is also rich in restaurants. This is where we had our best meals.
Bet our favorite restaurants:
- Salvaje with a cool atmosphere, wood, and its famous bread
- Lo Nuestro with its beautiful views and textures
HAVE FUN WITH THESE activities
- Dolphin watching
- Boat to Lobos Island
- Buggy tour
- But also; surfing lessons, 4WD tour in Cofete, windsurfing, scuba diving…
Best hotel offer in these cities
Overall, we find that:
- Morro Jable has the most diverse offering
- Corralejo has the best offer for adults only
- Costa Calma has our favorite hotel: Hotel INNSide
- Caleta de Fuste has the best complex around the beach, with several hotels and a huge shared spa: Barcelo.

And why not Puerto del Rosario?
Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura.
It’s not a very touristy town. There aren’t even many hotels.
You’ll find mainly apartment rentals.
We love the city. It has a pretty church, lots of sculptures, a sandy beach in town and a wilder beach to the south.
And it’s central enough to explore the whole island.
But you won’t find the vacation atmosphere of other cities.
